"Dessa Rose,"
From The Creators of "Ragtime,"
At New Rep April 24 - May 18

From April 24 - May 18, New Repertory Theatre will present the New England Premiere of "Dessa Rose," from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the award-winning composer-lyricist team of "Ragtime."

In "Dessa Rose," two outcasts, one a fallen lady of society abandoned by her husband, the other a pregnant slave sentenced to death on the gallows, are thrust together.  As they attempt escape, they form an uneasy alliance, securing them both their freedom and that of their infant children.

The journey proves treacherous and their lives become further intertwined as the women are forced to transcend racial barriers. They forge a true friendship that makes them realize they have far more power together than they would ever hold alone. Based on imagined details of real events, this powerful story of two strong-willed women explores diversity and unlikely friendship in the antebellum South.

The cast includes New Rep favorites Leigh Barrett and Todd Alan Johnson. Broadway actress and Boston University alumna Uzo Aduba will return to Boston to play Dessa.

Uzo Aduba recently played Toby on Broadway in "Coram Boy," and will be part of the Broadway Revival of "Godspell" this summer.

Leigh Barrett has appeared at New Rep in "The Wild Party," "Into the Woods," "Ragtime," "The Threepenny Opera," "Sweeney Todd," and "Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol." She has also appeared at Lyric Stage, Stoneham Theatre, Gloucester Stage and SpeakEasy Stage.

Todd Alan Johnson has appeared at New Rep in "A Streetcar Named Desire," "the Wild Party," "Into the Woods," "True West," "The Threepenny Opera" and "Sweeney Todd." He has also been seen on Broadway in "Aida," and in the national tour of "Les Miserables."
