SpeakEasy Gets “Ruthless”

Hot on the claw-like heels on its phenomenal run of “Bat Boy: The Musical,” SpeakEasy Stage Company will present the debut of a new version of the hit off-Broadway musical “Ruthless.” Performances will run June 6 - 28.

A musical parody of everything from “The Bad Seed” to “Gypsy” and “All About Eve,” the show tells the story of young Tina Denmark, every mother’s (and director’s) nightmare. Tina, is seems, wants the lead in her elementary school production of “Pippi Longstocking” and will stop at nothing, including murder, to get it.

“Ruthless” won the 1993 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. It is now being reworked for both a London and New York run and show creators Joal Paley and Marvin Laird have selected SpeakEasy to try out the revised book along with a new song.

Directed by Larry Coen, the Boston cast will feature Kathy St. George as Tina’s mother, Margaret Ann Brady as Tina’s grandmother, Will McGarrahan as agent Sylvia St.Croix and Kristin Parker, a 9th grader from Natick’s Walnut Hill School as the malicious, duplicitous, treacherous and destined for stardom Tina.
