“tick, tick, BOOM!”
To Star Joey McIntyre

New Musical From the Creator of “Rent”

Boston’s own Joey McIntyre, originally of New Kids of the Block and currently seen in “Boston Public” on Fox-TV, will star in the highly anticipated run of the new musical “tick, tick, BOOM!” at the Wilbur Theatre, May 27 - June 8.

“tick, tick, BOOM!” is the creation of Jonathan Larson, recipient of the 1996 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for “Rent.” Based on Larson’s own life, the musical looks at a young composer who’s facing his 30th birthday and about to fall into oblivion. His girlfriend wants to get married and best friend is making it big on Madison Avenue while he’s still waiting tables and trying to write the great American musical.

The show was originally performed by Larson in 1990 as a solo show. The current version, which had its world premiere at the Jane Street Theatre in 2001, was restructured with the help of award winning playwright David Auburn to feature three actors. Unlike “Rent,” which is mostly sung-through, “BOOM!” showcases a more traditional musical theater style with a book and 14 songs. McIntyre starred in the off-Broadway production of “tick, tick, BOOM!” in the 2001-2002 season.

Fans of “Rent” are well aware that Larson died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm just hours after “Rent’s” final dress rehearsal off-Broadway (and ten days before his 36th birthday). Larson’s death alone brought the show great attention. It subsequently transferred to Broadway and received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score.

Rounding out the cast are:

Wilson Cruz, known for his portrayal of Ricky on the ABC-TV series, “My So-Called Life” and Victor on “Party of Five.” No stranger to Larson’s work, he created the role of Angel in the Los Angeles production of “Rent.”

Nicole Ruth Snelson, who created the role of Winnie Tate in the Broadway revival of “Annie Get Your Gun” starring Bernadette Peters. Having studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music, Snelson has appeared in the national tours of “Beauty & The Beast,” “Show Boat” and “Hello, Dolly!”

Tickets are available at the Colonial Theatre box office or by calling Ticketmaster at 6174-931-2787.

Tickets will be available at the Wilbur box office after April 21.
