Springtime's
For "The Producers"
Tickets On Sale NOW
Still six
months to go, however tickets for the eagerly awaited engagement of Mel
Brook's hit musical, "The Producers,"
are now on sale. Stop
by The Colonial box office, The Wilbur box office or by calling Ticketmaster
at 617-931-2787. Performances will run from June 17 - August 17, 2003.
Having racked up a
record 12 Tony Awards, "The Producers" is based
on
the Academy Award-winning 1968 non-musical film of the same title. The
story line follows a down on his luck theatrical producer, Max Bialystock,
and his meager accountant, Leo Bloom. Together they hatch what they believe
to be the ultimate scam. Raise more money than they need to put on a sure-fire
flop and pocket the difference. What they don't count on is that the show
("Springtime for Hilter") is so bad, it's good.
Having written
the book (with Thomas Meehan), music and lyrics, Mel
Brooks was lauded by USA Today as having "put the comedy
back into musical comedy."
Beginning
his career in the golden era of television, he was a writer
for Sid Casear on "Your Show of Shows"
and "Caesar's Hour." Brooks would,
of course, go on to create such hit cult films as "Blazing
Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," "History of the World,
Part 1" and "To Be Or Not To Be,"
among others.
His film
company also produced a number of prominent motion pictures
including: "The Elephant Man," "My Favorite Year"
and "84 Charing Cross Road" (which starred
his wife Anne Bancroft).
"The Producers"
is directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, known
for such highly major Broadway shows as "Contact," "The
Music Man,"
"Crazy for You," "Showboat," "Big," "Steel
Pier" and "Oklahoma." She also
choreographed Madison Square Garden's annual "Christmas Carol."
